How the aviation medical eye examination works

1

First the application at the AMC/AME

Before the eye examination, the application for the assessment of fitness must have been submitted to an authorised AMC (Aeromedical Center) or AME (Aeromedical Examiner). Only when the case has been opened do we receive a referral and can book your appointment. We then send the findings to the AMC or AME.

4

Duration and dilating drops

The examination takes about 90 to 120 minutes. For a thorough retinal examination you receive pupil-dilating eye drops. They can reduce vision for 4 to 8 hours and cause glare. Please bring sunglasses and note: you must not drive afterwards.
5

What to bring

Valid original passport or identity card, all current and well-fitted glasses and contact lenses you use at present (including corrected sunglasses) and, if applicable, a cost approval, for example from Skyguide or your employer.
6

After eye surgery

If you have had refractive surgery (laser treatment for short-sightedness, long-sightedness or astigmatism) or surgery on the face, eyelids or eyes (squint, retina, cataract surgery), we additionally need your prescription before and after the procedure and the operation or discharge report. Upload them in the form.
